Day 14 – Vilanculos

We leave at 8am it’s going to be another long drive day as we travel north to our next stop at Vilanculos. Its humid this morning and there’s heavy grey clouds in the air and for the first time this trip we get rain. It clears and we return to the by now standard hot, humid, blue-sky weather that we’ve so far enjoyed whilst in Mozambique.

Today we’re headed for a cliff top camp 10km outside Vilanculos that overlooks the 5 islands that constitute the Bazaruto Archipelago, one of the largest Marine reserves in Southern Africa. We’ll be sailing to one of the islands tomorrow on a dhaow.

Our campsite is rustic and the good news is that there are already tents up so we won’t have to put ours up or dismantle it when we depart in 2 days time. The facilities are basic but there’s plenty of hot water and frogs that seem to have a penchant for swimming in the toilet bowls!!

We sleep well after a delicious Mozambique meal of peri peri chicken, barracuda, brown rice and matapa. We fall asleep to the sound of the waves below us, cicadas and frogs.
