Just 40 hours after soaking up the history and charm of bijou Salzburg, it’s time for our next adventure: a drive through the stunning Julian Alps to Slovenia! Our destination is Kamp Danica, nestled conveniently close to the famous Lake Bohinj.

The journey from Salzburg is nothing short of scenic, seamlessly taking us from the familiar Austrian landscapes into the heart of Slovenia’s breathtaking natural beauty. We’re trading cityscapes for soaring peaks, lush valleys, and the promise of pristine alpine lakes. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this stunning Alpine scenery.
Our home for the next four nights is a fab campsite, perfectly located on the banks of the River Sava. The river flows directly from Lake Bohinj, which is just about 8km up the road from us. Our pitch is absolutely beautiful, offering incredible views. With the car unloaded and the tent swiftly set up, it’s time to kick back by the river, and take in the stunning vista and soaking up nature’s beauty.

For dinner, we head to the campsite’s welcoming restaurant. It’s veal for me, and a delicious trout for Brownie – both perfectly cooked. Tonight’s beverage of choice is a bottle of crisp, local sparkling wine. We decline dessert, but we’re offered a complimentary Slovenian blueberry liqueur: Borovničevec (pronounced “boh-rov-nee-che-vetz”). Made from wild forest blueberries, which are smaller and more intensely flavoured than their cultivated cousins, it’s a truly delicious and wonderfully local way to conclude our meal.

Leaving the warmth of the restaurant, we head back towards our tent. The lighting around the campsite is minimal, so torches are definitely required to navigate our way back to our temporary home! We gather our shower kit and wander off to the wash block, which, although a bit further than we’d ideally like, is wonderfully clean, spacious, and boasts tonnes of hot water!
With snow still visible on the distant mountains, we know it’s going to be a chilly night in the tent, so thermals are definitely the order of the day. Woolly hats are on standby, just in case the temperature decides to drop dramatically. As we drift off to sleep, the soft, soothing flow of the River Sava outside our tent provides the perfect lullaby.
